Improving Canada's Caregiver Program

Effective Dec. 1st, 2014, Citizenship & Immigration Canada (CIC) has establish a new CAREGIVER WORK VISA Program. This program allows non nationals to come to Canada to work as caregivers through one of two different Pathways and also allows successful candidates the ability to apply for Permanent Resident Status after completing 2 years of full-time work experience in Canada within four years. The government promises to fast track applications in approximately 6 months after applying if all criteria are met.

Caring for Children Pathway

A pathway to permanent residence for caregivers who have provided child care in a home. You must meet all of the requirements listed below to apply through the Caring for Children Pathway.

  • You must show that you performed the duties listed in the NOC 4411 job description, including most of the main duties and ALL of the essential duties

Caring for People with High Medical Needs Pathway

A pathway to permanent residence for caregivers who have provided care for the elderly or those with disabilities or chronic disease in a health facility or in a home.You must meet all of the requirements listed below to apply through the Caring for People with High Medical Needs Pathway.

  • Registered nurses and registered psychiatric nurses (NOC 3012)
  • Licensed practical nurses (NOC 3233)
  • Nurse aides, orderlies and patient service associates (NOC 3413)
  • Home support workers and related occupations (NOC 4412)
    • Note: Only Home support workers are eligible under NOC 4412. Housekeepers are not eligible.

Requirements:

  • Equivalency of successful completion Canadian Grade 12 PLUS one year full time university / college in Canada. (Applicants educated in the Philippines will need successful completion of 4 years of University / College studies).
  • For the applicants who have 4 years course but not in healthcare/childcare related, at least 2 years full time paid employment related to the caregiving “Pathway” chosen, completed within three years immediately prior to the day on which the caregiver submits their application for a work permit.
  • You must be able to speak, read and understand either English or French at a level that allows you to function independently in a home setting or in Homecare/Nursing Home facilities.
  • You must have a written employment contract between you and your future employer. The contract defines your job duties, hours of work, salary and benefits.
